Why is "crab feed" normally associated with fundraising? What does the phrase really mean, and where does it come from? I have an impression that it has something to do with the Catholic Church?

I think it's associated with fund-raising for churches and other organizations because it's a low-cost way to raise money; that usually occurs on the east coast where there is a comparatively large population of Catholics near the ocean, so that crabs are readily available and relatively inexpensive. We also have such things here in the Pacific Northwest; they're often associated with the Native American tribes in this area, but other organizations do it as well. Also a good way to get a crab dinner comparatively inexpensively (Dungeness crab is native to our area, and it's VERY pricey in a restaurant!) - very good stuff, and the money goes for a good cause :-)
