I am sure if you call the African Consulate or even the American Embassy… you will get your answer.

You can compare different charities at charity navigator:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/
It will give you detailed info on which charities are best (as far as how much money actually goes to help the cause and how much goes for administrative purposes, top rated charities, ect.).
Personally, when I donate, I use Oxfam or the IRC (International Rescue Committee). Best of luck to you and bravo for your desire to help others

There are many different charities that send aid to Africa like, Feed the Children, Christian Children's Foundation, and the charity that I donate to One.org

If you would like to make a difference in Africa, and I applaud you for what you are doing, I would target the huge needs on a humanitarian level.
I just returned from a trip to Kenya and Sudan, and the greatest need that I can see over there is the need for care of orphaned children. Any charity that focuses on medical care, education, safe food and drinking water, or construction of homes is in desperate need of donations. The link below is an example of an organization that does all of these in South Sudan.

Best of luck and thanks for caring enough to ask.
