Try an all church auction. Have members donate items that they no longer need. Give them credit for them.(Non-cash donations) Get local businesses to donate items as well. Ask for larger items such as cars, trucks, campers, art work, tickets, returned merchandise. Organize the sale well, and advertise it. Get an auctioneer to sell all the items. Make it a community event. Donate a portion of the sales back to the community in some way.
References :
A long time ago, our church needed to raise money for the building fund and they did these things (I can't remember it all, but I'll list and then maybe it will help you think of more)
- They had a great big BBQ with a band and decorated with bales of hay - had a local BBQ restuarant donate the food and sold tickets to the public.
- Had a silent auction - got donations from the community
- Gave several members each a $10 bill and asked them to use it to raise money - it was seed money for them to use to raise more money - one lady actually bought seeds and sold the plants, on lady used the money to bake goods and sell to her neighbors, etc.
- They sold certificates that said that they were the donator of one brick in the new building
- You could have a Fall Festival and a carnival for kids
- You could ask all church members to clean out their attics and then have a huge garage sale with all proceeds going to the church

If you do alot of small things - well the funds add up quickly. I would encourage every group in the church to work toward the goal. Get a big sheet of poster board and make a thermometer showing the success rate of how much money you have raised.
Best of luck and God's Blessings to you!
References :
Check to see if any of your "local" celebrities or businesses would like to donate for a local church fair. Gather items to donate. Have the ladies of the church make some baked goods, Guys grill burgers (donated food by a grocery who would like publicity for being so gracious & need the tax write off). Sell crafts made by church folks, homemade goodies, etc. Have a quilt-bee and raffle the quilt off. Lots of folks like to get out and visit these types of things in the fall. Good luck.
References :
Only one I know of is to pass the collection plate within your own congregation only. To go outside your church family for money (whatever the reason) is wrong, even sinful. Never, never-ever solicit money from the world. To do so means that God is not in your church.
