Holding an event as large as World Youth Day requires an abundance of dedication, effort and money. How is the Church in Australia preparing for the upcoming event? Archbishop Hickey of Perth describes the situation.
“There’s great enthusiasm. Every diocese has got people praying for it, every school is raising money to send young people, every youth organization is trying to get there. So there’s great enthusiasm, but it costs a lot of money, so they’re all raising money and having local events to raise the level of spiritual awareness of what a wonderful thing this is”.
Because of the high cost of attending WYD some bishops are helping to secure funding.
“It’s expensive to go to Australia, it’s a long way from Europe, it’s a long way from every continent in the world, and yet I think if the bishop can draw people with some money to make a foundation, to enable young people to go, it’ll be worth while. I’ve met many bishops here in Italy who are doing exactly that. They are calling for young people to go, and if there isn’t sufficient money, they draw collections together to try to give them the opportunity to go to Sydney for the World Youth Day”.
