Should I organize this event? I know the question’s kind of long, but I really need help and opinions please!?

Invisible Children is an organization working to end the longest-running war in Africa, bring child soldiers home to their families, and help educate the world’s next generation of peaceful leaders. One thing you can do through them is sponsor a child for around $300 a year. Ending this war is a cause that I am insanely passionate about, and I really want to help as much as I can. The organization itself holds about one or two big events a year, but there won’t be any for a while and I want to continue to help. I don’t have near enough money to sponsor a child on my own, so the other day I came up with some ideas for events to raise money that would then go directly to sponsoring as many children as possible, and the extra would either go to Invisibile Children or be saved until another event or time when there would be more so another child could be sponsored, and here was my idea:

Well, my original idea was to have a concert in a park or somewhere outdoors with just some local bands, but getting the space and permits and equipment set up would just be way too difficult for me (I’m 15 by the way, and it’ll probably be just me and maybe one other friend my age organizing this with a little help from our parents) so I had to change that idea.

I was thinking of doing a "lock-in" of sorts like lots of youth groups have. I just had this idea today, so I haven’t been able to ask the church or anything, but if I can I want to get my church for a Friday or Saturday night sometime this summer either in June or August (probably August just so everything can be fully organized) and have an overnight event. Things it might include would be:
-a concert, but like not a full out one, just a few bands (I know like 4 or 5 that might be willing, and I know people who know more) just in the sanctuary or whatever, very casual.
-food! of course. probably pizza :]
-Invisible Children has some videos about what’s been going on with the war and all, one’s an hour and one’s a half hour. I’d either just keep playing those in one room so people can just go watch whenever or have a time when we all watch it together (I know that many people have already seen them though).
-bracelet making. there’s a group at my school that makes hemp bracelets and sells them to raise money for Invisible Children. we could teach people to make these so they could participate in that fundraiser, and they could make them there (each person could keep one they made, the rest would be to sell, so people there who don’t make them can still get them too and there’ll be plenty for the fundraiser to sell just in general.)
-time to just mess around in the youth lounge or gym (there’s like a pool table and other table games in there, and there’s also a gym where we could have like twister or silly games like that set up)
-making t-shirts. have a plain white t for everyone and a room with markers, fabric paint, all that jazz, so they can make their own Invisible Children shirt or just decorate a shirt for fun.
-awareness is a huge issue for this cause, so writing letters to local as well as national politicians asking them to help us work for peace in the areas affected by this horrendous war.

So, my questions.
1) What should I charge for this? It has to be enough to pretty much cover t-shirt/bracelet (if we do that) supplies and food (I don’t have much money to buy that) as well as money for the cause. I’m thinking $7-$14 depending on how many people come, does that sound reasonable? Too much?

2) Which of the activities listed above should be included? What other activities should I add?

3) Would you go to this event if it were in your area and to raise money for a cause you knew about and supported (many people at my school and other schools in my area are very involved with this cause)?

4) Should it be limited to high school age people only? I don’t want to go much older, and really not much younger either. 8th grade and up?

5) Should I do this at all? As I said, the organization has had like 4 of its own events, and a few of them have been overnights. Usually they involve some sort of simulating the situation in Africa (a few days ago we "abducted ourselves for the abducted," walked 3 miles holding on to a rope then camped out outside overnight until we were ‘rescued’ by the media and a mogul. last year there was an overnight at a local school I couldn’t make it to where they had only like a water bottle and a plain sandwich to eat and had to walk with the water on their heads and some stuff like that. Their events are also usually very educational. Since this event will be organized and run fully by me, not by the organization at all, I don’t want it to seem like I’m just copying their events, which is why I’m making it more of just a fun thing that benefits the cause, but I still want to make it meaningful and educational (just evenly mixed with fun :]). So should I do it at all?

6) Do you think I’ll get
enough people to come to the event to make it worthwhile? Most of IC’s events here have 150 to 400 people, and I know of a lot (like 50) at my school or that are my friends who would probably go if it fit their schedule.

It sounds pretty expensive. You need to start small. My friends and I started up an organization against gang violence and this summer we’re gonna be putting up a camp. To raise awareness, we set up a tent with a banner and fliers to give out at a parade that happened in our city. We gathered donations. We made about $300 in profit since the tent, fliers and banner cost $350, but we’re a non-profit organization so it didn’t really count. Why don’t you try setting up an awareness tent at an event of some sort? You can collect fundraisers there.

What I also did was get members of our community involved. If you set it up as an organization, you may be able to get a grant. Talk to your school principal and politicians in your city.

Your idea seems good, but it may be a little too much to handle for a first time thing. You don’t want to invest all this money in it for nothing. And try to get support from some of your friends. Set up a meeting after school and discuss fund raising ideas.

You guys could speak on the radio, public events, get an article in the newspaper.

This way, a lot of people will hear about what you’re doing and want to get involved. They’ll donate to you guys.

Maybe, if you have enough time and some cash to spare, you can try out what you want to do. It would be a great way to get people involved, especially youth. Go talk about it at elementary schools too btw. You want to make the thing fun at the same time.

Overall, start small. Begin fundraisers. Put up fliers. Talk to community leaders. Draw out a plan.
